Founded in 1914, Cornish College of the Arts (the “College” or
“Cornish”) is the only private, accredited college in the Seattle
region offering baccalaureate degrees in visual and performing arts.
One of only three private, nonprofit performing and visual arts
colleges in the nation, Cornish offers a distinctive blend of visual
and performing arts grounded in a core curriculum of humanities and
sciences.
Cornish is a four-year college offering a Bachelor of Music degree
and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in art, dance, design, theater,
and performance production. Cornish College is accredited by the
Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and
Colleges and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
Currently 800 students are enrolled in degree programs and another
150 in preparatory classes. The College is located in the heart of
downtown Seattle, and in proximity to the entire arts community.
The College encourages students to exchange ideas and to experiment
- find their unique artistic voices and share them in ways both
innovative and traditional. The mission of Cornish College of the
Arts is to provide students aspiring to become practicing artists
with an educational program of the highest possible quality, in an
environment that nurtures creativity and intellectual curiosity,
while preparing them to contribute to society as artists, citizens,
and innovators. In addition to offering degrees in visual and
performing arts, Cornish fulfills its mission by serving as a focal
point in the community for public presentation, artistic criticism,
participation and discussion of the arts.
The College completed their first financing through the Authority in
2003 when they borrowed funds for the acquisition and upgrading of
the new downtown Seattle campus. Cornish financed the purchase and
renovation of its new space through an Authority financing in the
amount of $20,785,000.
